Sophie Drouin, mosaicist
Every story has a beginning, and mine goes like this…

My parents were much taken aback when, for my fourth birthday, I asked for a prospector’s rock hammer. They responded by getting me violin lessons instead, thinking that for a child my age, music was a less hazardous field than rock-smashing…

Well, I guess I’m stubborn. At last count, I had seven different mosaic and rock hammers, and I still do love the feel and look of rocks and minerals, my first mosaic materials. I have been lucky enough to learn from good mosaic teachers, the first one being my own Italian-trained father, and I have had the great fortune to visit Italy twice myself to learn more about the world of mosaics.

I’ve also been lucky enough to make it as a professional orchestral and chamber music violinist, and I now enjoy a dual career in two very different art mediums. My world is colored with a variety of music, rocks and vitreous materials, a wonderful mixture of the ephemeral nature of live music and the ultra-permanent nature of mosaic.
